Abstract: Clinicians often draw from published lists of core words to guide vocabulary selection and instruction for beginning communicators with limited speech who require augmentative and alternative communication. This presentation examines published core word lists through a developmental lens and discusses implications for individuals with complex communication needs at various stages of language acquisition.
