Birmingham Karnezos, J., & Light, J. (2016, August). The effect of a checklist on school-based Speech-Language Pathologists’ descriptions of AAC assessment. Presentation at the biennial conference of the International Society of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ISAAC). Toronto, Canada. [Handout]
There are millions of children with complex communication needs and require effective augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) assessment. This study sought to determine the effect of a checklist on school-based speech-language pathologists’ descriptions of the process. A pretest-posttest control group design was used to review the impact of a checklist on whether discussion featured (a) students’ communication needs; (b) student skills; and (c) partner and environmental supports and limitations. The results of this study indicate the potential of checklists to improve school-based augmentative and alternative communication assessment and, therefore, intervention.
