PSU Doctoral scholars Jen Thistle, Ji Young Na, Megan Tobin shared their research to date at the Twenty-ninth Annual Graduate Exhibition (April 6, 2014). The exhibition is an opportunity for degree-seeking graduate students across a broad range of disciplines to present their scholarly work.
Jen’s poster presentation shared her research with Dr. Krista Wilkinson examining features of AAC design; specifically, the impact of symbol arrangement, and symbol background color. Clinical implications about arrangement features to facilitate learning and speed of locating symbols, exercising caution with background color, and the critical need for individualization were emphasized. Ji Young discussed her study with Dr. Krista Wilkinson around the development of the Early Development of Emotional Competence (EDEC) Tool to advance development of appropriate AAC supports for children with complex communication needs to have access to means for communicating about emotions with range, depth, and cultural sensitivity. Megan shared her poster presentation on A Proposed Model for Individualizing Social & Communication Supports for Adults With ASD.
The PSU AAC academic community is committed to disseminating the results of our research to the field to advance knowledge and understanding. With this goal in mind, doctoral students are actively involved in writing papers for publication in journals or presentation at local, state, national, or international conferences.
