Abstract:
This poster presents a review examining what is currently known about community participation, living, and recreation outcomes for adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Adults with ASD have shown historically poor outcomes across a variety of areas; however, the majority of the attention thus far has focused on vocational outcomes.
Participation in social and recreational activities in the community can help an individual build communication skills, form friendships and other relationships, and establish natural support networks.   Adults with ASD can benefit from interventions targeting skills development at the individual level, development of environmental supports, formal social skills instruction, and informal support groups, as well as community-level interventions designed to increase knowledge about autism and acceptance and understanding of individuals with disabilities.
