Abstract:
Changes to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system design; specifically, dynamically presenting text that exactly matched the simultaneous voice output, could potentially lead to better literacy outcomes for individuals with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and who have Complex Communication Needs (CCN). In this study, all five participants demonstrated gains from baseline on their performance of single word reading after exposure to Transition to Literacy features integrated seamlessly within use of an AAC app organized in a grid layout.
