This session examines the working memory demands of aided AAC used by children with intellectual/developmental disabilities. Analysis of the multi-component model of working memory and data from recent research provide initial guidance regarding the consideration of visual characteristics of a display and how these characteristics may influence the demands of AAC. Predictions of performance in using aided AAC based on working memory abilities of children with intellectual/developmental disabilities will be discussed.
